With many years of experience in the mining industry, on too many occasions I have experienced the clumsiness of tripping while climbing steps. This has caused me to question the daunting possibility of dropping the hammer, podgy ratchet, rattle gun or any other tool or materials I carry when climbing the staircase. I have witnessed a near miss when a gympie hammer (2kg) fell through the stairs 12m above ground after being dropped from another shutdown workers’ bag.  It fortunately missed three unsuspecting workers on its way down. After this happened we all agreed that something needed to be done to eliminate the risk of dropped objects falling through the rise gap between the stairs.”
                  Contract worker WA mining.

Carrying tools in your tool bag is a great way to maintain 3-points of contact. However, most tool bags don’t zip up entirely. Because of this, the risk of tools falling and potentially injuring or causing death is too significant to ignore.

There are many times during a shift when a worker will carry heavy materials up and down the stairs to maintain good housekeeping and to reduce the risk of trips around the work area.

Large nuts and bolts, lengths of scaffold tube and wear-plate liners are only some of the objects that will, without a doubt, fall through the stairs if they were to be dropped.

This puts everybody who is accessing the stairs below at an alarming risk of being struck by a falling object due to them being unaware that they are in direct line of fire.

Ideally mechanical lifting aids would be used to transport tools but this isn’t economically viable or practical so objects have to be carried up and down stairs. So implement Step Mesh and allow it to eliminate the risk to workers and liability to employers.
